Jade, how did you get involved with YAF?

I first got involved with YAF in their production of Fame in 2005. It’s a rare opportunity to be part of a musical of such a scale, and YAF gave me the experience of what it’s like to be part of a production. I was also one of the main characters (it was my first time taking such a big role as well!), so I learnt a lot from this experience!

The best way to prepare for an audition is to…

Have an open and eager mind to do your best.

My top tip for auditioning is to…

Enjoy it because you are there to perform, not to compete!

My favourite thing about YAF…

The professional and creative approach is great even though I was still at school then. The best memory was receiving standing ovations a couple of nights in a row. At age 17, it was a dream came true.

Fame helped me overcome some challenges…

I had a strong dance background, but it took me some time to learn to speak properly in a theatre setting. I was also very shy with my on-stage boyfriend. It was just something I had to overcome myself.

15 seconds left! Anything else?

YAF is a great opportunity for young people to experience being part of a professional production, which is not to get into in HK, where even audition opportunities are not easy to come by. So, YAF also creates the opportunity for young people to be seen. For me, I had the chance to be seen out of my comfort zone, which was important for my professional training a year later. The energy is also very positive in the sense that each member, be it backstage or front, supports each other throughout the whole process which is crucial to making the show a success.

Thanks Jade!
